ContributorWriter's note - I began this review shortly after Lifeline came out, but a family illness disrupted schedules and it fell off the publication radar. I am publishing it in case it might be somewhat useful to someone. After all the horror of the last week in gaming circles, it felt like a good time to talk about playing a fun video game. When I r, Seattle-based unexpectedly compelling, and unexpectedly successful zombie apocalypse outpost management game, I noted that, although it was a compelling and very entertaining simulation of the terror and tedium of life after risen death, it was at times, I think it’s fair to say, a little glitchy.Lifeline, the second DLC content pack for State of Decay, continues this tradition. Zombies regularly clip through closing doors, and on occasion through walls. The AI of allies often struggles to get into cars, leading to awkward moments where you have to accelerate and reverse gingerly to coax them into the right animation – often a little hard to do when a horde of zombies is bearing down on you. These are usually pretty inoffensive, or at least recoverable within the game. Jan 16, 2018 State of Decay Lifeline is a DLC in which you play as a group of soldiers tasked with saving survivors and fighting off the undead. However without a plan this task can be harder than necessary.
At times, more significant problems arose. A zombie that needed to be killed to complete a quest turned out to be invisible, and had to be coaxed into attacking my character to reveal itself. And, for a spooky few minutes, an entire mapful of zombies became phase-shifted, indifferent to my presence as I drove straight through them.
Both situations corrected themselves, but for a while I thought I was going to have to quit and restart from the last save point. These should be pretty serious issues – this kind of glitching in a Call of Duty game would occasion howls of outrage, and that outrage would not be seen as unjust. But with State of Decay, it sort of works. The Romero EffectIf a game like Techland’s upcoming Dying Light is intended to be a “AAA” zombie experience – something akin to World War Z - State of Decay is probably the closest approximation to the classic George Romero splatterpunk experience, iffy production values and all.
- Lifeline, the upcoming expansion for State of Decay, will put you in control of a military unit with new objectives and abilities, developer Undead Labs announced on its blog. You’ll control.
- State of Decay: Lifeline, the second expansion and the first story-based add-on for Undead Labs' hit Xbox Live Arcade title, turns the tables on State of Decay by putting the player on the military.

And so on.The player controls a group of survivors, moving control from one to the other as they grow tired or wounded. In classic style, the survivors have to find shelter, fortify a base and scavenge for supplies. Although the zombies are easy enough to kill individually, hordes, accompanied by mutant zombies with unusual strength or speed, or the ability to release paralyzing screams or noxious gas, can get dangerous.
Preparing for dustoff – Lifeline’s action is punctuated by zombie raids on the player’s base, followed by airlifts of any civilians who make it through.Time pressure is increased by Lifeline’s biggest innovation – the siege. Periodically, depending on how well the zombie population is managed, a wave of undead will spill out from the city and attack the base, and it is wise to be present when they do. This is an opportunity for some serious carnage, as mines and fireworks set beforehand explode outside the base. However, it feels like more could have been done: the other soldiers act without instruction, and often the action boils down to the wholesale slaughter of zombies at the choke points – the three gates into the base – without too much finesse. The increasing intensity of the sieges provides a sense of time pressure. If and when the zombies get in, the race to kill them before they can disembowel the civilians waiting for exfiltration – and seal up the breach before the next wave attacks – is often frenetic. State of Decay excelled at atmosphere – the strains of Jesper Kyd’s soundtrack accompanying tense attempts to escape a wrecked vehicle or search a warehouse by night for building materials – and Lifeline tightens but continues that stylistic approach.Undead CentreState of Decay came out at around the point that it became clear that zombie saturation was being reached in design documents – a state that seems to be ongoing.

At the time, its fresh approach and impressive worldbuilding more than made up for its workmanlike graphics and technical blips. Only a year has passed since its release, but, particularly in light of the arrival of the next-generation consoles, its relative graphical simplicity and technical oddities are looking more pronounced. However, the balance of the different elements of post-apocalyptic survival that made State of Decay such an enjoyable experience remain, although tweaked towards a shorter, more dynamic experience. The unexpected success of State of Decay caused Undead Labs to spin the title into a franchise, putting on hold the open-world zombie multiplayer game it was intended to trail. Since then, Day Z has become a phenomenon, and the market has become no less crowded. Where Undead Labs goes next is an interesting question – the studio recently announced Moonrise, a cute-looking mobile game, in partnership with Kabam – but everything, from sales figures to public statements to the name of the studio itself, suggests a return to pastures rotting is on the cards. This game scratched an itch in a tremendously satisfying way, but, in a next-gen age, it feels like the next iteration of State of Decay will face a less forgiving audience. In the meantime, however, anyone who enjoyed State of Decay should definitely consider Lifeline as a worthwhile companion piece.
